A PA Amplifier Mixer offers all the functions of a professional multi-channel mixer, with 4 or 8 channels of balanced microphone inputs, each with its own EQ, level adjust and hi and low impedance input choice to suit different microphone types. These will be complemented by stereo auxiliary inputs, direct record outputs, and larger units will feature digital reverb and echo effects and further EQ adjustment on the output. Some also have built-in USB/SD MP3 playback.

Buy Powered PA Mixers

Uniquely to PA amplifier mixers, almost all of these inputs will be on the front face of the unit for easy access, with the rear panel usually having just the power input and speaker outputs. These are mounted in either a 2U or 4U height, standard rack size 19-inch traditional wooden enclosure which is either carpet or vinyl covered. It's a classic design, which is hardwearing and functional making the PA amplifier mixer one of the most useful pieces of equipment available.

Onboard amplification will be anything from 50W per channel up to 200W, which is plenty for standard PA mixer amp usage. Bigger power amps are only really needed when using large speaker rigs intended for mobile DJs and party events, where the source is often bass-heavy music and a large output SPL is required, in which case you would look at a starter or professional amplifier mixer to suit your needs. Speaker connections will be either 6.35mm (quarter inch) jack plug, or the heavier duty NL2 socket type, purely for ease of connection and long life.

Mixer amps have been utilised in the live music circuit for a good while at this stage, the inner mechanisms of this type of amp have improved greatly in the last decade. Nowadays, they are at a stage where the technology featured within boasts more ways to expand and enhance your final sound output than ever before. This amplifier mixer is now one of the most commonly used pieces of sound equipment in the professional working DJ world.

PA Mixer Amps

Connecting your passive speakers to an amp of this style can help you to explore the potential of your speaker capabilities. The music you have chosen can be shaped to your preference with the turnable dials, some systems allow you to increase and decrease the amount of bass, mid and treble frequencies. This customisation of low, middle and high frequencies helps keep your sound output consistent, especially if you are a mobile DJ moving from venue to venue.

Powered PA mixers are a contemporary solution to most passive speaker issues, being a unit to draw power from and as mentioned the refinement of sound. Sound experts would agree that being able to freely control your frequencies is a great idea during performances, sometimes the genre or style of the song could use slight refinement. If you make a playlist that includes greatly varying styles of music, it is wise to find a good level for the room you are in that can easily get the best sound from all of your chosen music.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a powered PA mixer?

A powered PA mixer is a standard mixing desk for live music and public address, with one major difference - it has powered outputs. The powered outputs mean that you can connect passive PA speakers directly to the mixer without requiring a separate amplifier, which is beneficial for mobile DJs or touring performers who want as little equipment to move around as possible.

What is the difference between powered and passive mixers?

A powered PA mixer has powered outputs, meaning that it can supply power to passive speakers. In comparison, a passive mixer only has line-level outputs, which would be used to connect them to active speakers. Powered and passive mixers are each designed extremely similarly, with the addition of powered outputs being the main difference.

How do I choose a powered PA mixer?

To choose a powered PA mixer, you should consider firstly whether it is powerful enough to drive your passive speakers, which is determined by the wattage and impedance ratings. Next, you should take into consideration the inputs and control options available on each mixer, and whether you can connect all of your devices/microphones/instruments while being able to add any effects you may need, for example.

Do you need an amplifier if you have a powered mixer?

In some cases, you may need additional power amplifiers for your PA system, even if you are using a powered PA mixer. This is most common if you are aiming to use more than two speakers, as you will find that the impedance rating and power output rating of a powered mixer may not be high enough for your speakers. It is crucial to match the wattage and impedance of your speakers with an amplifier or powered mixer, so please consider this when looking to upgrade your equipment.

Which powered mixer is best?

The best powered PA mixer will depend entirely on your requirements. There are some important factors to consider when choosing a mixer, such as the wattage of the outputs, the number of input channels, and the type of connectivity that is available. Please feel free to get in touch with our knowledgeable sales team if you require advice about powered PA mixers.

When would you need a powered PA mixer?

A powered PA mixer would be needed if you have passive speaker cabinets without a power amplifier, as passive speakers need a dedicated amplifier in order to work properly. Not only do powered PA mixers provide power for passive speakers, they also provide a huge variety of input options with user-friendly control and effect options.

What is the function of powered mixers in PA systems?

For PA systems, a powered mixer is the central control unit that is used to connect microphones, audio devices, and instruments, where you can then mix several audio sources together for a master stereo output. Powered PA mixers, specifically, are also designed to connect directly to passive speaker units without the requirement for an additional power amplifier.

Can I use powered PA speakers with a powered mixer?

Most of the time, you can still use active speakers with a powered PA mixer, you will just need to use the standard master line-level outputs on the mixer, instead of the powered outputs. Not all models of powered mixers will have line-level outputs, however, so it is extremely important to check this before making a purchase.

Can I connect instruments to a powered mixer?

Yes, although it will depend on the type of instrument you are aiming to connect. For example, bass guitars and keyboards can usually be connected directly to a powered PA mixer, but you will find that the sound quality of your instrument is quite flat. We would always recommend using dedicated instrumental amplifiers for your instrument, and then use microphones with your powered mixer to amplify the sound being generated by your instrument amps.

Does a mixer improve sound quality?

A powered PA mixer can potentially improve sound quality in certain scenarios, but it ultimately depends on the specific circumstances and equipment being used.

A mixer is a device used to combine and control multiple audio signals, such as microphones or instruments, before they are sent to a recording or amplification system. By having individual control over each input source, a mixer can help eliminate unwanted noise or distortion and adjust the levels and EQ of each signal to create a more balanced and cohesive sound.

In a professional recording or live sound setting, using a high-quality mixer can make a significant difference in the overall sound quality by allowing for precise control and manipulation of each signal. However, in a casual or home setting, the benefits of a mixer may be less noticeable or necessary, especially if using only one or two input sources.
